ABSTRACT

The field of university dropout research is of utmost importance especially in the current context arising from the Covid-19 pandemic. Students who started their degrees in the last two years completed their pre-university studies during various phases of confinement and by combining traditional and virtual training. In this scenario, students' motivation and the way they cope with the difficulties of their first year of university are very relevant and will depend on a multitude of personal and social variables in their immediate environment. Previous studies have shown that many university students drop out of their studies early, but what factors and to what extent they affect this dropout is still a field under study. This paper focuses on the identification, classification and evaluation of a set of indicators based on teacher and tutor perception in different fields of study by applying quantitative and qualitative techniques. The results of pilot studies developed support the approach adopted, as they show how teachers can identify students at risk of dropping out at the beginning of the course and take proactive measures to monitor and motivate them, thus reducing the possibility of dropout. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study is to propose usage strategies to effect a greater engagement of libraries in the social network TikTok, observing this platform as a potentially innovative tool. This is a study based on a descriptive and exploratory research with a qualitative approach, with a survey of research and experience reports in scientific databases about the use of TikTok in libraries, as well as the collection of profiles in the social network itself. The results observed identified a still expanding scenario of libraries in the strategic use of TikTok specifically directed to marketing and digital positioning. That said, a proposal for planning the strategic use of TikTok focused on improving the digital positioning of libraries on the social network was developed, based on three aspects: good practices of use, tactics for influencer marketing, and support-ing digital tools. It was concluded that TikTok offers a range of possibilities for innovation in social media, being necessary that libraries start to use this platform as a resource for the optimization of their digital positioning in relation to the user, having in mind, mainly, the social and technological changes that are being re-modeled from the Covid-19 pandemic. © 2023, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. ABSTRACT

Currently, most educational centers have specific spaces where, depending on the technology available in them, specific practices are carried out. Some examples of these spaces are the computer labs, electronics, biology, chemistry, or maker spaces. The CreaSTEAM project aims to create STEAM spaces in schools, so that they are multidisciplinary and transversal spaces where elements and technologies of all kinds coexist, and above all, rather than being focused on technology, they are focused on the development of STEAM skills and vocations, especially to reduce gaps in diversity. This article focuses on the design of an instrument that allows the conceptualization of STEAM practices in these new educational environments, contemplating and relating both educational methodologies, technologies, and diversity gaps to be solved or studied.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze the epidemiological transition of fractures in patients who were treated in a tertiary hospital which is reference in traumatology during the COVID-19 pandemic to assess the changes in trauma service. Methods: This is a retrospective and descriptive analysis of data on orthopedics lesions treated at Instituto Doutor Jose Frota between December 16, 2019 and June 16, 2020 (three months before and after the first case of COVID-19 in Ceará). Results: In total, we evaluated 913 patients, 28.5% of which were women and 71.5%, men. We found a significative reduction (p < 0.05) in the proportion of female patients operated in the analyzed time. We also observed an increase in patients’ mean age, 35.4 years before the pandemic, and 38.48 (p = 0.04) during the consecutive period. Trauma mechanisms significantly changed (p < 0.05), with a proportional increase of high-energy traumas and reduction of instances of falling. We found a 11.9% reduction in orthopedic surgeries, from 655 to 577 at the time after the first case of COVID-19 (p = 0.071). Mean hospitalization length (p < 0.001) and time until surgeries decreased (p < 0.001). Conclusion: We observed the impact of lockdown in this hospital of trauma especially via the decreased number of operated cases and the change in patients’ profile and trauma mechanism. Level of Evidence III, Retrospective Comparative Study.

ABSTRACT

The year 2020 was marked by the pandemic of Covid-19, a fact that impacted on different aspects of life. The social distancing was one of the ways to contain the pandemic, causing the cessation of face-to-face classes in Brazil, migrating to a remote teaching model. In this reality, this study, which considers remote teaching within the Brazilian social, political, and economic context, aimed to problematize the teaching of Physical Education in the context of remote classes in Brazil, focusing on the work with those considered students of inclusion. It is a qualitative exploratory study, in which interviews with Physical Education teachers were conducted. 116 interviews were carried out through a questionnaire elaborated on the Google platform. The analysis followed the contribution of post-structuralist researches to think about Education, supported by the concepts of governamentality and teaching. From the analysis, two points are brought up for discussion: the practices worked in Physical Education with students of inclusion in remote education, and the idea of teaching crisis in inclusive Physical Education. Thus, it is argued that the lack of contact with students at school and the inequalities in the Brazilian social and economic context can lead to exclusionary practices and contribute to teaching burnout.

ABSTRACT

In 2020, the COVID-19 Pandemic hit the world. Measures to tackle it included social distancing, causing schools to close in mid-March 2020. Face-to-face classes turned into online ones. Considering this, we aimed at understanding the position taken by Physical Education in the online class scenario of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. We conducted qualitative research with school teachers working with online Physical Education lessons. The instrument was a 20-item questionnaire sent by email. Physical Education followed the activities produced by schools, but we found changes in the way of conducting lessons and highlighted challenges for teachers’ work and effects on the curriculum. © 2020, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul.
